Sustainability in Healthcare
Description of project: Barking Town Centre Child and Family Centre, London
Value: 12 million
GIA: 5,300 m2
Bringing sustainable modern healthcare and affordable housing into the community
BDH Community Ventures were commissioned by Barking & Dagenham PCT, to design, build, finance and operate the Barking Town Centre Child and Family Centre which provides a mix of health and local authority services and a one-stop shop for all services relating to children and families. It is placed in a key location at the heart of the Town Centre as part of an award winning regeneration project.
Working in partnership with Southern Housing Group we also built above the Health Centre high quality, eco-friendly residential accommodation which meets the Ecohomes ‘Very Good’ standard.
Building for the future
The scheme generates 20% of the building’s energy needs and 30% of its heat requirements through renewable energy measures. Passive solar design features have also been incorporated, such as the use of trees for shading. This exceeds the planning obligations and reflects our commitment to continuous improvement in this area.
‘This building stands as an exemplar of a sustainable multi-use health and social care facility with affordable housing, supporting local employment and industry’
Community Health Partnerships (Department of Health)
This scheme provides not only a cornerstone for the town’s regeneration, but will also deliver a lasting legacy of better service provision for the local community.
